Zur Schau gestellte Virtuosität ist nicht sein Ding. John Scofields Verschmelzung von Bebop-, Blues- und Rock-Elementen kommt mal ungemein entspannt und elastisch daher, mal ausgesprochen bissig und kantig. Und sein Sound ist wahrlich einzigartig. Während des Studiums an der Berklee School of Music in Boston trifft Scofield die anderen zukünftig wichtigen Gitarristen seiner Generation: John Abercrombie, Pat Metheny, Bill Frisell, Mike Stern. Zweieinhalb Jahre gehört er zur Gruppe der Fusion-Größen Billy Cobham und George Duke. 1982 engagiert ihn Miles Davis – Scofield wird weltbekannt.
Nach einigen Jazz-Rock-Alben wechselt der Gitarrist den Kurs: zunächst mit lustvollem Soul-Jazz und Funk, später mit Elektronik-lastigen Grooves, inspiriert von Acid Jazz, drum'n'bass und der Musik der Jam Bands. Seine aktuelle Solo-CD entstand während des Lockdown und vereint all das, was ihn seit jeher fasziniert - Jazz und Folk, Blues und Rock, aber auch Country & Western.
